The new Dumpert-app: completely rebuilt for video and community

Media item 1

Introduction

After more than ten years of partnership, Dumpert and livewall are introducing a completely rebuilt version of the Dumpert app.

The application has been redeveloped from the ground up and now serves as a future-proof, custom-built streaming platform where video and community converge.

Dumpert is a unique Dutch phenomenon - a hub for funny, remarkable and viral videos with millions of loyal fans: the ‘reaguurders.’ It is a massive success, and the aim is to keep it that way. Dumpert operates in a constantly evolving media landscape, and the platform must adapt accordingly. livewall has succeeded in developing the perfect platform for this.

“With a team of creative developers who are, in fact, Dumpert’s target audience: true ‘reaguurders,” says Martijn de Nijs, Commercial Lead Platforms at livewall.

Over the course of this decade-long partnership, there have been several major releases that continuously introduced iconic features. Think of the secret Dumpert soundboard, a self built application for video editing, and the infamous ‘harder trekken’ (pull harder) notifications.

While the focus used to be on searching for specific videos, current times demand a platform that encourages effortless viewing. Consequently, livewall designed an environment that adapts to the viewing habits of both Gen Z and millennials; a platform that makes continuous content consumption seamless.

The challenge: a renewed codebase

Since the last major release, the Dumpert app has been continuously developed. New features and layers were constantly added to the foundation. “This meant that implementing changes and updates was taking up increasingly more time.” notes Martijn. The application became harder to maintain due to the use of older technology. The renewed codebase was therefore more than welcome.

A system that works

The new Dumpert app is designed as an interactive streaming platform. Instead of copying standard UX patterns, viewing and interacting are integrated here. The app responds to the user’s dynamics. Consider, for example, the ‘Pleelists’: personalized playlists that tap into current content consumption. Subtle interactions and hidden details reward the loyal visitor. The experience is always central.

A fundamental renewal

“With the latest release, alongside a significant number of new features, major changes have been implemented behind the scenes, creating a new codebase that serves as a stable foundation for future developments,” says Martijn.

The result is a custom-built ecosystem in which strategy, design, and technology are perfectly aligned. With features such as infinite scroll, dark mode, and personalized ‘Pleelists’, Dumpert transforms a traditional video site into a platform that aligns with current content consumption habits. It is a platform that excels in high-performance video and interaction.

The end result: an app that adapts

The new app reinforces what made Dumpert great: a combination of video and interaction. Whether users are scrolling quickly or watching for longer periods, the new architecture supports both. Dumpert is now prepared for a new generation of users.

this is where the fun begins.
